I realized after I spoke to Brenda that I probably hadn't given most people enough time to plan on attending last Sunday, but I was fortunate to have Casey and James there. Our first project was frozen treats for the hoofstock, which included the Fallow deer and giraffe. We filled buckets of water, lightly flavored with the Red Raspberry gelatin we use for the chimps, added browse branches of Brazilian pepper, apples, bananas and carrots, and also added a long rope with a huge knot (thanks Casey for the Girl Scout knowledge applied ) and then froze it. It will be hung from the structures for the animals to lick and chew as the ice melts. Frozen treats will be a staple enrichment item. In April, we will be adding browse holders and a garden that we will add seeds and veggies to. We'll watch it grow a little, and then give to the pigs and spider monkeys. My intention is to progress the amount of items done each month to supply the most amount of enrichment for the animals possible. I will also attempt to increase Enrichment for All Species days to twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th Sunday, leaving the 3rd for chimp enrichment. All of this will be discussed with Terry and Brenda this week, so I'll keep everyone posted. I am looking forward to the new volunteers and new items to make. April will be a blast!!!
